What changed in reading apps in October 2026?

A dated note of the changes we could verify this month, and the earlier changes they sit next to.

The one dated change we verified this month is Magic Bookmark version 1.1.1, released on 27 October 2026, whose App Store note says: 'Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format.' Version 1.1, about five days earlier, added a flow for finishing a book and moving to the next. We have refreshed Magic Bookmark's profile; the other apps' cards are as last refreshed on 2026-10-11.

What did we check?

On 27 October 2026 we re-read Magic Bookmark's US App Store listing, including its version history, and magicbookmark.com. For the other apps we profile, the facts on our cards are as last refreshed on 2026-10-11. This note lists only changes that carry a date on the app's own pages or in a source already on our cards.

What changed in Magic Bookmark?

From its App Store version history:

  • Version 1.1.1, released 27 October 2026: 'Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format.'
  • Version 1.1, about five days earlier: a flow for finishing a book and moving to the next.
  • Version 1.0.10, released 19 October 2026.
  • The US version history begins with version 1.0.1 on 20 August 2026.

Earlier listings already described entering the last phrase you heard in an audiobook to find your place. The 1.1.1 note extends spoiler-free recaps to every format, so a listener can get the same recap a print reader gets from a photo of the page.

We also recorded the listing as it stands. The app is listed as Magic Bookmark: Book Recaps, with the subtitle Spoiler-free reading companion, from Yomu Inc. It works alongside your own copy of a book and gives a recap that stops where you are, a cast list built only from what you have read, spoiler-free answers to questions, and chats with characters who only know the story up to your page. The first Bookmark Credit is free; after that it is one credit per book, from $4.99 for one credit to $1.40 each in a 50-credit pack, with no subscription. It is on iPhone (iOS 16.4 or later), in English, rated 13+, and on 27 October 2026 it showed 4.8 out of 5 from a small number of ratings (24) on the US App Store. Its website says Android is on the roadmap for later.

What changed on our cards?

  • Magic Bookmark's profile now lists the recap, questions and character chat, the audiobook note from version 1.1.1, the free first credit, the language and age rating, the rating count, and the full privacy label: identifiers used to track you, and purchases, contact info, user content (photos), search history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics linked to you.
  • Its audiobook and picking-a-book-back-up rows now cite the 27 October listing. Their stamps did not change: Magic Bookmark, Basmo, Bookly, Fable, Goodreads, Literal and The StoryGraph remain on record for audiobooks, and Magic Bookmark remains the only app on record for picking a book back up.

Which earlier changes are still on our cards?

These carry their own dates. We have not re-read those pages since 2026-10-11, so treat them as current to that date:

  • Goodreads announced a Did Not Finish shelf on March 13, 2026; DNF books with a read date count toward the Reading Challenge.
  • Literal's changelog for May 2026 says it is sunsetting the current version of Clubs; existing clubs still work in the meantime.
  • Rakuten Kobo said on June 29, 2026 that Kobo reading progress and finished books flow into a linked StoryGraph account.
  • Amazon's Kindle Recaps, announced April 2, 2025, include Story So Far, and Ask this Book launched on the Kindle iOS app in the US in December 2025. All three work inside Kindle ebooks; the Kindle readers guide has the details.

What else is new on this site?

New this month: Goodreads alternatives by reader type, guides for Kindle readers, series readers and BookTok and romantasy readers, two habit lessons on reading more books and reading goals you keep, and new answers in common asks.

How do we date changes?

We list a change only when the app's own page, store listing or a named source gives it a date, and we say when we read it. If you spot a change we missed, the contact page has a correction topic.

How should you read an app's version history?

The App Store shows a version history for every app: version numbers, release dates and the developer's own notes. Three things to know when you use it:

  • Notes are written by the developer and can repeat. A feature announced in one version may be mentioned again in the next, as happened here.
  • Some features arrive without a version, because they are switched on from the developer's side. A listing can change before the history does.
  • Apple's catalog data and the listing page can differ slightly in what they show, so we record which one we read and the date.

That is why each change on our cards carries its source and the date we read it.

Update, 4 November 2026

The November note records the corrected dates and the other changes we have verified since.
