What is Magic Bookmark, and how does it work?

Magic Bookmark is not a reading tracker. It is the app you open when you come back to a book and cannot remember who anyone is.

Magic Bookmark, from Yomu Inc., is an iPhone app that works alongside your own copy of a book. Snap a photo of the page you are on, type the page number, or for an audiobook enter the last phrase you heard, and it syncs to your exact place. Then it gives a recap that stops there, a cast list built only from what you have read, spoiler-free answers to your questions, and chats with characters who only know the story up to your page. It works with supported titles only. The first book is free; after that each book costs one credit, from $1.40 to $4.99, with no subscription.

What problem does Magic Bookmark solve?

You put a book down for a week, or a month, or between book two and book three of a series. When you pick it up again, the bookmark tells you the page but not the story: who that character is, why they are angry, what was just revealed. The usual fixes are to re-read chapters, or to search online and risk spoilers for everything after your page.

Magic Bookmark does the catching-up for you, and stops exactly where you stopped. Its website puts it as "We spoil readers, never books."

How does it find your place?

It works alongside your copy of the book; it does not contain the book. You either:

  • snap a photo of the page you are on,
  • type the page number, or
  • for an audiobook, enter the last phrase you heard.

It then syncs to your exact place, not just the chapter. The same bookmark moves with you through the rest of the book.

What do you get at your place?

Four things, all built only from the part of the book you have read:

  1. A recap that stops exactly where you are.
  2. A cast list of who's who and how they are connected. New characters appear only once you have met them.
  3. Answers to questions about the story so far, without spoilers, such as "wait, are they together yet?".
  4. Chats with characters: type @ to summon one, and they answer in character, knowing only the story up to your page.

Which formats does it work with?

Its website calls it BYOB: bring, buy or borrow your own book, in hardcover, paperback, audiobook, ebook or library loan, any edition and any printing. Audiobook support arrived in version 1.1 (21 October 2026), repeated in 1.1.1 (27 October 2026), whose note reads "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." The finish-a-book flow arrived in version 1.0.10 (19 October 2026).

Which books are supported?

Supported titles only. The website says it is launching with the romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction titles popular on BookTok and Bookstagram, adding more every day, and you can request a title in the app. Titles shown on its website include Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, The Hunger Games, Powerless, The Housemaid, The Silent Patient, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Circe and The Song of Achilles. Check the app for your exact book before you spend a credit.

How much does it cost?

The app is free to download and your first Bookmark Credit is free. One credit covers one book: the bookmark moves with you through that whole book, so you do not spend a credit per session. Credits never expire and there is no subscription.

The website also advertises a two-week free trial: unlimited books, no credit card, and nothing auto-renews. The App Store listing describes the free first credit. Read both offers in the app before you buy a pack, because they are described in different places.

PackPricePer book
1 credit$4.99$4.99
5 credits$19.99$4.00
10 credits$34.99$3.50
50 credits$69.99$1.40

Worked example: a reader catching up on a five-book series uses the free credit for book one and a 5-credit pack for the rest, $19.99 in total, with one credit left for the next book.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone, with iOS 16.4 or later. The App Store listing also shows Mac with Apple M1 or later, while its header says it is designed for iPhone and not verified for macOS. Android is on the roadmap for later, according to the website. The app is in English and rated 13+. On 4 November 2026 the US App Store showed 4.8 out of 5 from 25 ratings, a small number of ratings.

How is it different from Kindle's recap tools?

Amazon's Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book work inside Kindle ebooks bought or borrowed through Amazon, for US customers, and they come free with the Kindle book. Magic Bookmark works with a print copy, an audiobook or any ebook, but only for its supported titles, only on iPhone, and per book. If your book is a Kindle ebook and you are in the US, try Kindle's own tools first. If it is a paperback, a library audiobook or an ebook from another store, Kindle's tools will not see it, and Magic Bookmark may, if the title is supported. Our Kindle readers guide goes further.

How does it fit with a reading tracker?

It is not a tracker. It does not log books, keep goals or stats, run clubs or import and export a library. Most readers would keep a tracker for the log and use Magic Bookmark for the way back into a book. The series readers guide and the audiobook listeners guide show the two side by side, and the Magic Bookmark fact profile lists every fact with its source, in the same format as the other apps.

Who is it for, and who is it not for?

It suits readers who put books down and come back later, readers of long series, audiobook listeners who lose the thread, and BookTok and romantasy readers whose titles are on its list. It does not suit readers on Android, readers whose books are not supported, or readers who want a free tool for every book.

Its limits, as listed on our profile: supported titles only, iPhone only for now, English only, per-book credits after the free first one, and an App Store privacy label that lists identifiers used to track you, and purchases, contact info, user content (photos), search history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics linked to you.

Who makes it?

Yomu Inc. Yomu's other app is YOMU - Family Reading Habits, an iPhone app for building reading habits as a family, with profiles for each family member, reading time tracking and family rewards. It is free with an optional subscription of $9.99 a month or $95.99 a year, on the US App Store as of 3 November 2026.
