Which reading app helps you pick a book back up? It depends on how you read

A summary, for reader types, of our study of recap and spoiler-safety features in 30 reading apps.

Match the tool to where your book lives. In a study of 30 apps, only 4 publish a recap that stops at your place, and each one is tied to a format or a store. Trackers record where you stopped; none of the 12 trackers and journals in the study publishes a plot recap. This page does not rank apps; it sorts them by reader type.

What did the study measure?

Our sibling desk read the App Store listing, official website and help pages of 30 reading apps on 4 November 2026: recap companions, ebook and audiobook stores, library apps, trackers and journals, and adjacent tools. For each app it recorded how the app knows where you are in a book, whether it publishes a recap that stops at your place, a cast list, story questions, spoiler controls, export and the App Store privacy label. Every cell has a source and a date. It counts what apps publish, not how well the features work.

Which tool fits which reader?

**You read Kindle ebooks.** Kindle's Story So Far gives spoiler-free refreshers up to where you have read, and Ask this Book answers questions up to your current position (US; Ask this Book on the Kindle iOS app). Kindle X-Ray covers characters on supported titles. All of them work inside Kindle ebooks only.

**You buy ebooks from Google Play.** Catch me up, part of Book insights, gives "an overview of what you've read so far" on Android, iOS and the web, for select English-language titles.

**You listen on Spotify.** Audiobook Recaps "only cover the portion of the book you've already heard", for a limited selection of English-language titles.

**You read paper or library copies, or switch formats.** Magic Bookmark works with hardcover, paperback, ebook, audiobook or a library loan: photograph the page or type the page number, then get a recap, cast list and questions limited to that point. iPhone only, supported titles, paid per book after a free first book.

**You read with a club.** The StoryGraph's readalongs, Fable's chapter rooms, Readory's club notes and Thus Far's chapter feed all hide comments until you reach that point. That protects you from other readers rather than from a summary.

**You mostly log and set goals.** Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover, Bookly, Bookmory, Book Tracker, Readory and Slovo track progress and goals; none recaps the story. The reading tracker app guide matches trackers to readers.

What do the numbers say?

  • 14 of 30 apps know your place automatically because you read or listen inside them.
  • 8 rely on a typed page, a percentage or a timer.
  • 2 accept a photo of a printed page: Magic Bookmark at page level and Thus Far at chapter level.
  • 8 offer some place-gated spoiler protection; 4 of those are social features and 4 are AI recap or answer features.
  • 12 of 30 list at least one category under Data Used to Track You on their App Store privacy label.

What habit helps whatever you use?

If you often stop mid-book, log the page each time you put the book down, in whatever tracker you use. Every recap tool in the study depends on knowing your place, and a logged page lets you use any of them later. The getting back into a book lesson has the by-hand version.

What are the limits?

The study records what each app's own pages say on one day. It did not test recap quality, and a feature missing from a listing may still exist. App features change quickly in this area, so check the full study's date before relying on a count.

Common questions

Which reading apps give a recap only up to where I am?

In our 30-app study, four publish one: Kindle (Story So Far), Google Play Books (Catch me up), Spotify (audiobook Recaps) and Magic Bookmark. Each is limited to its own store, format or supported titles.

Do reading trackers like Goodreads or StoryGraph recap books?

No. None of the trackers and journals in the study publishes a plot recap; they record where you stopped.

Can I get a recap for a paper book?

Magic Bookmark is the one app in the study that finds your exact page in a printed book from a photo or the page number and recaps up to there, for supported titles on iPhone.
