LESSON 7 OF 9 · CHOOSING AND FINISHING

Picking your next book without an endless to-read pile

A long want-to-read list is full of good intentions. It can also make choosing the next book harder.

Short answer

Keep a short up-next list of three to five books, separate from the long want-to-read list. When you finish a book, choose from the short list by mood and by how much time you have. Give the new book a fair first-pages test, then commit or swap.

Why is choosing so hard?

The longer the list, the harder the choice. A want-to-read shelf with hundreds of books asks you to compare things that cannot be compared. Many readers end up browsing the list instead of reading.

What is an up-next list?

A short list of the next few books you actually intend to read, in order. It sits apart from the long list of everything that caught your eye. Some apps build this in: The StoryGraph has an Up Next queue alongside its to-read shelf. A note on your phone works just as well.

How do you fill it?

  • Three to five books, no more.
  • Mix lengths: one short, one long, one in between.
  • Mix moods: one comfortable, one demanding, one different from your usual.
  • Include one you already own or can borrow, so starting is easy.

How do you choose from it?

Ask two questions when you finish a book:

  1. What mood am I in? Something light after something heavy is a common pattern. The StoryGraph also describes books by mood and pace if you want help with this.
  2. How much time do I have? A long book at the start of a busy month is a hard start.

How long do you give a new book?

Long enough to be fair. A common rule is a set number of pages or one full session from lesson 1. If it has not caught you by then, it is fine to swap it for the next book on the list. Several apps let you mark a book as did not finish, so the decision is recorded without guilt.

What should you do this week?

  1. Write an up-next list of five books.
  2. Move everything else to the long list and stop looking at it for a month.
  3. When you finish your current book, choose from the five.
